The Final NaNoWriMo Break

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

cup1.jpgHello everyone, and welcome to the final NaNoBreak.

Here is the final post for you to rant about the process, brag about how long you have already been done, talk about your story or your characters…whatever you want. Consider the doors of the virtual café officially open.

It’s been an interesting journey, with many people dropping out in the first week and many more people finishing before the deadline. Now, as we in Australia either sit back and enjoy the last day or type furiously to get word counts met, people in the States are meeting their final twenty-four hours.

I’m spending my final NaNo hours getting other work done, because November 30th is the deadline for many things in my life other than NaNoWriMo. Once again I come to the end of November with a different number of words I expected.

However, I am not sick of the story, like I usually am at this point. My husband and I spent last night wandering around Melbourne so I could get some locations mapped and named for the story. I have never had to do that for a story before (the maps and landmarks all being in my head with other stories) so it was a fun experience.

All in all, I think NaNo is whatever you put into it. I consider it a way to get myself started on working on something, and I always start each year. I have to shake my head at people who take it too seriously – either because they think it’s a waste of time or because they think they’ll finally write a novel and instantly get it published. Either way, it’s a bit silly.

I finish this year’s NaNoWriMo once again happy to have participated in the event.

Congratulations to all who make it past the word count line and also to those who may not have but still stuck it out until the end.

NaNoWriMo Break

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

notebook.jpgHello and welcome to another NaNo break! Today is the beginning (if you start your week with Sunday and not Monday) of the last week of NaNoWriMo. This is a space for you to talk about your word count, talk about if you’re considering quitting or have already done so, and talk about all the weight you’ve gained by eating junk food while writing.

So, how is it going?

I’m still behind. Of course. I thought the third year would be the charm for me, but it’s obviously not. I’m planning on getting a lot of writing after I finish an outline for the story I’m working on, but I don’t plan on passing the fifty-thousand mark before this Friday. Maybe half that.

I feel bad somewhat because, as the Fiction Scribe, I feel like I should complete NaNoWriMo. Then again, I feel I’m doing more as a true writer by taking my time with what I’m working on because I like it a lot and I don’t want to end up throwing half of it away because I wrote in a rush just to meet the NaNoWriMo deadline.

This is my first romance – I’ve always wanted to write a romance – and I want to take my time with it.

I could start something weird and pointless to make the deadline…but I won’t. Mr. Scribe would probably kick my butt if I started another project.

Good luck and good speed, everyone!

NaNoWriMo Break

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

cup1.jpgWelcome to yet another NaNobreak!

How is your NaNo going? Are you beating the word count? Are you done? (I’ve seen entirely too many people on Live Journal say they are done already. *grump*)

Or, like me, are you incredibly behind almost to the point of thinking about saying, “I’ve given up”?

Actually, I haven’t truly been thinking about that, but I have had the occasional thought that I should be panicking or something. Under 10k words when we’re more than halfway through the month can’t be anywhere near good.

Yes, there, I’ve admitted it. I’m behind enough to say ‘a lot’ isn’t quite descriptive enough. I’m not worried about it, though.

The beauty of NaNoWriMo is that it’s supposed to be something fun. If you strike on a good story, awesome. If you don’t, then feel free to plough through to 50k with a large amount of crap writing. Either way, fun.

This round I’ve not only been busy, but I have found a story and characters I am confident in. As in, after massive edits and rewrites, I might be so bold as to try to get it published. That’s why I’m not focused entirely on the 50k mark. If I get there by November 30th, awesome. If I don’t, I’ll continue to plod along at my own pace and try to write a story worth reading.

So, NaNo participants, sit back, have a cuppa, and feel free to rant, post your word counts, and do whatever else you want in the comments section. Even if you are like me and taking your time with a story line you didn’t expect to happen.

NaNoWriMo Break

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

cup1.jpgHello everyone! It’s that time of the year again where everyone breaks out their addiction of choice and sets out to write the fifty-thousand word novel. It seems like a crazy feat to some, a strange event to others, and a completely waste of time to the group somewhere over there…but we are in it to have fun and possibly finish a book while we’re at it.

Because I like to never make things easy on myself, I am stepping out of my fantasy writer boots and once again am trying to write something I’ve never written before. (I do this every year for some reason. Maybe that’s why I have yet to reach the 50k mark on time.)

Honestly, though, I have a few characters that have been on my mind for a while, and I would like to ‘release’ them on to the page. I’m not sure exactly where it’ll go at this point, but that’s where the beauty lies, isn’t it?

My weapons (addictions) of choice this year are my comfy pyjama pants, apple juice, and good helpings of chocolate. (NaNoWriMo: The month we pad our novels like we pad our bums.) I hope this year will be the charm and I’ll bust through the word count before November is over, not three months (okay, five months) later like I have done the past couple of years.

If you are looking for motivation or inspiration during this month, check out Write Anyway, where I will be putting up daily prompts for both NaNoWriMo and NoBloPoMo.
