How Cool is This?

by JM

Elisa at The Books Stacks gave me a heads up on this one, and I’m glad she did! I’m so excited.

As it turns out, the United States is hosting another American Idol, but this one is a different sort and is likely to have writers stirring. Using the same sort of popularity voting which is a vital part of the show American Idol, authors will post up their work and get voted through to following rounds by readers.

The ultimate prize is $5,000, a book contract with Touchstone Fireside and distribution by Borders.

How awesome.

    I saw this too….

but to me it kinda stinks of a popularity contest.

    Meh, what do I know?

Maybe I’m just jealous ’cause I don’t have a full ms to throw into the ring.

  2. Jaime Says:

Check out http://www.gather.com - I don’t think you need a full one, but I could be wrong.

Of course it’s a popularity contest, but with people voting from all around the world, there’s bound to be a bit more to it than American Idol and all the happy, shiny people.

  3. Bethany Says:

I’ve looked at the site. Yeah, you do need a full one. You have to send in both the first chapters and the full ms.

It just seems to me that it’s not the quality of the work that’ll be judged, but how many friends you can get to vote for it (whether or not they even read it). I hear that a similar thing happened the last time gather offered a short story contest.

  4. Jaime Says:

True, true, but I guess I like to have a little faith. With a panel of judges voting on five from the very beginning, there should be some quality stuff in there somewhere.

  5. Sara Says:

I just read an article about this myself. Looks very interesting.

  6. Jaime Says:

I saw you posted it up, too. Excellent. :)
