Pet Peeve #38 - Irregardless

How does this happen? Why do we feel the need to make up words that mean exactly the same thing as other words?
Irregardless = Regardless
Regardless = Irregardless
Why do we need them both? Why do people insist on saying “irregardless”?
I have no idea. I’m busy. We’re all busy. The last thing we need is people making up words that are the same as other words simply to sound different from everyone else?
Well, for those of you who didn’t know - just say ‘regardless’. That’s all you need and all you’ve ever needed.
Bah.

As much as I love learning new words I hate when, each year, they add new made up words to the dictonary like crunk or ginormous. It seems midly insulting to the English language to me.

I’m thinking it’s a French thing, as I recognize the construction. So, technically it would mean “regardless of that.”

Flammable and inflammable always makes me scratch my head.

Ugh. When I hear people say irregardless, it’s like nails running down a chalkboard.

Sara - I don’t mind if they do that as long as it’s a slang dictionary - and clearly labeled as such.
Elisa - True, but it’s mostly it being unnecessary more than the word itself. We have the word “regardless” so why another when it’s not needed and so utterly similar?
Bernita - That’s another good one I shake my head at.
Jennifer S - I’m glad to know you know what I’m talking about.
