Time Management Pt. 1

With my one, not very exciting post yesterday, the issue of time management came to the forefront of my mind.

Why does it always seem so hard to find time to write? If we find we have writer’s block, then we have all the time in the world to ponder away all the things we should be writing, but when we have ideas, we suddenly have so much laundry and cleaning to do.

In my case, yes, I have laundry and cleaning to do, but that doesn’t mean I should be able to skip off on my writing for a day or so. Too often we regard writing as this wonderful, illusive thing… we never get done.

For the first part of the series of posts on this topic, I want you to try something.

For one entire day - the whole day - take a notepad or note cards with you everywhere. (You should be doing this already, by the way. Tsk, tsk.) I want you to document the times and events of your day. Even how much time you sit down to watch television to how much time you allow yourself to enjoy your chef salad at lunch time.

Don’t adjust yourself in any way. Take the day as you would always do it, and try not to pay attention to what you’ve written until the day is over.

I’ll be doing it too, so no worries. It’s a bit late in the day for me to start, but I will do it tomorrow so I can have it to use as an example to work with in the later posts.

Cheers!

PS. Is it just me, or does that picture of a clock look slightly evil? Think of the Jaws theme while you look at it…

That clock is definitely lurking with intent to loom. (That’s illegal in San Francisco, BTW).
Did you get the NaNoWriMo e-mail that mentions ScriptFrenzy.org? Almost makes me ponder writing a script other than the comedy bit I’m struggling with.
Oh, and I am so obsessive about notebooks that I have now realized that I keep one everywhere, and 2 in my purse. Darn handy things.

  2. NeelimaP Says:

I should start using notebooks….blogging keeps you in the writing mode, no excuses!

  3. Jaime Says:

Elisa - Hehe. Creepy, isn’t it? I did get a NaNo email, but I have yet to read through it. I’ll have to post up a mention. Good on you for carrying notebooks!

Neelima - Notepads which are small enough for pockets are a great way to get the habit started.

  4. Dana Says:

You’re right, that clock is distinctively evil. If it weren’t so shiny, I’d hurt it. Sadly, it’s shiny. I can’t hurt shiny.

  5. Jaime Says:

Ah, cursed shiny things making it so, so hard!
