Weekly Writing Challenge

by JM

writing-outdoors.jpgHow did your week of locations go? My week of different writing locations had me writing…

*On the couch
*In bed
*At my husband’s desk
*At the mall food court
*In the library

Overall, it was a good experience and one that taught me if I want to get work done, I should be sitting in the library or at my husband’s desk. (”What about your desk, Fiction Scribe?” You don’t want to know… Maybe I’ll post pictures.)

This week, your challenge for every day is to free write for five to ten minutes before you write. (Because yes, I’m assuming you write every day. ;) ) Also, I’m not talking about your regular free write about your day, your girlfriend, or your daisies. I challenge you to free write about your story. About possibilities or about absolutely ridiculous things - it’s your choice.

Good luck and have fun.

  1. Susan Helene Gottfried Says:

One of my favorite places to write this week was at the desk in my hotel room, looking out over Niagara Falls.

Unfortunately, it’s not a place I can frequent.

  2. Richard Says:

I wrote in my room and in the garage, where I got this real beat up but surprisingly comfortable couch to sit on. I’m thinking of doing more of my writing there. It’s away from distractions like the TV and the dreaded the Internet. Probably would have wrote at the library , kitchen, and my living room couch also, but no time this week. But those are also places where I usually write anyway. My room seems to be the less conducive to writing.

I like this week’s challenge. One because it’s easy, and two because I think it is beneficial. It makes writing easier to get your ideas down first and then organize ideas, rather than trying to do both at the same time. But the key is to not rush the ideas. You still have to think, or else what happens is what gets written down is pretty worthless.I’ve done this a lot in the past, trying to rush through a free write, which is just a waste of time. Free writing sounds easy but it’s a little bit more complex than it sounds.

Susan - I love Niagra Falls. It’s so beautiful. Though, admittedly, were I there, I’d be writing in the butterfly conservatory. :)

Richard - I’ve never lived in a house with a garage, but I definitely would have tried it had I one to go to. I like exploring different spaces so I can find the best space in terms of comfort and work being done.

I’m glad you like the challenge this week. I wouldn’t be writing my novel yet if I hadn’t spent regular sessions free writing possible plot lines and taking notes on ideas.
