Weekly Writing Challenge

by JM

writing-pad.jpgLast week I challenged you to write in a different genre.

This was hard for me to do because I like to incorporate a lot of different elements into my stories, elements which are traditionally romance, sci-fi, and so on. I have, however, tried my hand at a little autobiographical work. It turned out to be a lot of fun for the most part (bad memories are never a lot of fun) and I got a lot of writing done. It’s a rough draft at this point, of course, but it still felt good to do as much typing as I did.

This week’s challenge is something a little different again. Instead of free writing, note taking, or even a minimum page or word count…

I’m challenging you to write a poem.

It can be any kind - rhyming, haiku, ballad - you like, just as long as you write one poem a day for the rest of the week.

There’s a bit more to the challenge, too. If three readers post up one or more of their poems from this week’s challenge, I’ll post up one of my poems. If five readers post up one or more of their poems from this week’s challenge, I’ll post up two of mine. If ten readers post up one or more of their poems, I’ll post up five poems - one for each day next week Monday through Friday.

Sound good to you? We’ll see. Poems must be posted on this post. If you would like your poem put in the Scribe newsletter for October, let me know along with your poem.

I wish I’ve been writing. But lately I’ve done little or no work writing. Trying to figure out a plan to get myself to at least write for a half an hour, so hopefully I can get into a groove, then writing becomes so much easier. But mostly I’m just stuck on a scene in my novel. I know I should skip it and come back, but I refuse to do so.

I’ll try to write poem this week. Been a year since I’ve written one.

Any poets or poems you particularly enjoy? I need some inspiration.

I’ve been delightfully slacking in my novel as well. I have immigration stuff to do as well as just joining a gym.

I was never one to “just skip ahead” and come back to a scene. It’s not my style and usually makes for rewriting all of the following scenes anyway.

The first thing that comes to mind is slam poetry, but nah. I like haiku very much and also like Japanese imagery such as cherry blossoms, kimonos, pagodas, etc.

  3. Richard Says:

Was about to use an old joke from the Simpsons, where I think Lenny says something meatloaf or some kind of loaf being the worst. But I forgot how it went.

But so that’s how I kind of feel about haiku. I like them but it’s too minimalist. I want to try something longer, so I guess I’ll seek out some poetry to read this week.

    Also, gym? What’s that?

Evolution, why can’t it work faster. Its slow ass can’t seem to keep up with technological advancement, especially nowadays.

Er, wait, am I allowed to say evolution? Should I be watching out for things I eat and drink? Or will the secret police just arrest me, send me on a mock trail, and then shoot me in prison?

Man, I must be tired. Mind’s just going all over the place. Wish I was writing instead. Ha ha. Ha ha.

  4. JM Says:

Get some sleep, Richard. I think if you wrote well on little sleep, you’d have figured it out by now. :) Sleep now, write later.

  5. Susan Helene Gottfried Says:

Poems, eh? Rhian’s got a weekly poetry train, so I’ve been getting back into practice.

Rather than post one, I’ll invite you to do a label search at my blog for poem.

If you’d like one for the newsletter, let me know. Some I am saving to submit.

  6. JM Says:

    Thanks, Susan. I’ll have a look. :)

  7. Kyla Says:

Just a bit of silliness I wrote:

    Life was fun
    while it lasted
    sitting here atop this
    blasted
    cloud
I wonder how do I tell
    am I in heaven,
    or is this hell?

    Sure there are clouds
    all fluffy and white
but who can tell if it’s
    day or
    night…
    There is music playing
    in tones of B sharp
    but the only instrument
    I hear is that
    damnable
    harp

    I now have wings
    growing out of my back
so far all they’ve given me
    is allergy
    attacks
    Yes, I know
    I could probably take
    flight
    but did they ever consider
    I might be scared of
    heights?

    My once colorful
    wardrobe
is a thing of the past
Now I’ve rows of white robes
    for attending
    mass
    And mass is not fun
    of this I will tell
    Once again I must ask
    is this heaven or hell?

  8. JM Says:

Kyla - I LOVE the poem. :) Thanks for putting it up. And you are number three as well, so I have to post up my poem this week.

  9. Kyla Says:

Awww, thank you, I’m glad you liked my poem.

  10. JM Says:

I love it. I’d like to put it in the newsletter if you don’t mind. :)
