Weekly Writing Challenge

by JM

writing-pad.jpg

Last week I kept the poetry challenge going. However, since I only got two entries, I don’t have to put up any poetry this week. I will keep the challenge going, though, in case anyone would like to join in.

This week I’m wondering if the writing challenges are really helping you. If they’re not, please feel free to say so and I’ll stop wasting both our time. :) If you think prompts better help you overall, then stop by Write Anyway and feel free to link your responses to the prompts in the comments section. I’ll link to your response.

I’ve been struggling with my novel. Truly and utterly struggling. So this week is going to be a challenge that suits my current procrastination.

For an hour every day (change the time as needed - I know not everyone can do an hour a day) I am going to sit down with no distractions beyond noise. (I tend to write better with music or television in the background.) No computer. Certainly no internet. I’ll buy sushi so I can’t use cooking as a distraction.

Basically, for one hour every day, I will sit my butt down on the couch and get some writing done.

Finally.

I need to get out of this cycle of procrastination and avoidance. I’m not sure exactly why I’m avoiding it like I do, but maybe this will help me to figure out. I hope it will help you, too, if you’re having a similar problem.

I always tell myself that I’ll do them, but then I never do. Mostly because I haven’t done much writing for a month. Got really busy with a programming project the last two weeks. I wish I could work that hard on my writing. But writing is tough. And I think I’m a little burned out. So maybe this time off will help. But I don’t it will.

If you keep the poem thing going, I’ll certainly write a poem. Just when is the problem.

  2. Julie Says:

Mm, procrastination! Been there (still go there), done that, don’t like it…so I salute you for sitting on your butt and just doing it. A little needed inspiration for me today as well…just checking out this site for the first time, which I like, and I find the reminder I required that I still have not written today, except in my blog, and that I have several projects to get to. So, thanks!

And alas, I am not a poet, so I cannot comment on the writing challenge. But if there’s ever a fiction challenge….

  3. JM Says:

Richard - I know how that goes. With marriage, visas, the gym, my birthday… There always seems some reason to leave writing by the wayside.

I thought I was just a bit burned out, but I have been like this for entirely too long. I’m already planning on writing time today, though, and I’m actually rather excited.

Julie - Thanks for stopping by! I hope you find the challenge useful. I’m certainly thinking I will. :)

Hm. I’ll have to see if I can dig up some of my childhood short stories and see if I can set a fiction challenge in the future.
